AIMS
To produce Midwife at Diploma level who is competent in providing efficient and effective Midwifery services with minimum supervision to improve quality of health care services.
OBJECTIVES
1. To guide trainers/ Instructors on how best to influence skills acquisition for midwifery practice.
2. To enable learners acquire scientific knowledge, attitude and skills that will enable them to solve
routine and general Midwifery assignments required in the health sector.
3. To determine the scope of technical skills and responsibilities required to be performed and
therefore trained for this specific cadre.
4. To increase access and improve on the quality of skills training in the health sector.
5. To determine competence in work procedures as different tasks for the cadre are performed.
DESCRIPTION OF A REGISTERED MIDWIFE AT DIPLOMA
A registered midwife at diploma qualification is a health professional who provides care to women and their babies during pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. They provide the course of prenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care, including physical examinations, screening and diagnostic tests, the assessment of risk and abnormal conditions, and the conduct of normal vaginal deliveries and abnormal deliveries under supervision. A diploma midwife is fully responsible for clinical decisions and the management of care within their scope of practice. They play administrative roles including supervision, mentoring, and work in collaboration with other health professionals as well as consult with or refer to medical specialists as appropriate. Diploma Midwives attend births in hospitals, birth centers and at home.
MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Direct Entrants
Advanced level certificate, 1 principle pass in Biology, and 2 other subsidiary passes in any other subject, but including Chemistry.
Direct entry should be restricted to not more than three years after secondary school.
Pass a pre-entry Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports oral interview.
Authority Responsible for the program:
Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports - the department of Business Technical Education and Training (BTVET)
Award:
The award shall be a Diploma in Midwifery
Examination and Awarding Body
The examination and awarding body shall be the Uganda Nurses and Midwives examination board. Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports;
Registration body.
Registration body for the practicing license shall be Uganda Nurses and Midwives council.
COURSE DURATION
Duration of the course shall be three (3) years.
